Construction of the Grove Street Pedestrian Overpass is scheduled to begin July 20, 2009. The overpass is located above the Grove Street entrance ramps to I-84 West and I-91 North connecting the Connecticut Convention Center plaza and the Connecticut Science Center plaza. The bridge will provide convenient, year around pedestrian access between the Connecticut Convention Center plaza, the Connecticut Science Center plaza, Riverfront plaza the downtown district and East Hartford. The project is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2010.

In order to facilitate construction and to ensure public safety, the Grove Street I-84 West Bound and I-91 North Bound entrance ramps will be closed daily from 6:00am until 4:00pm and will reopen from 4:00pm to 6:00pm to accommodate the afternoon rush hour. Ramp closures will occasionally take place overnight. The ramps will remain open all day during major events at the Connecticut Convention Center.

The ramps will be closed east of the traffic light on Grove Street beyond the entrances to the Convention Center, the Marriott Hotel and the Science Center/Riverfront parking garages. The entrances to these facilities will remain open at all times.

The following temporary detour route has been identified:

To I-84-West

  • North on Columbus Boulevard to State Street
  • West on State Street to Market Street
  • North on Market Street to I-84 West entrance ramp

To I-91 North

  • North on Columbus Boulevard to State Street
  • West on State Street to Market Street
  • Continue north on Market Street to Reverend Moody to Weston Street to Jennings Road
  • East on Jennings Road to I-91 North entrance ramp

Other alternate routes leading to these interstates will continue to be accessible during the overpass construction.
